This song was written while I was in the Philippines staying in a beautiful part of Palawan. A huge American navy ship turned up and based itself just off the coast for the weeks that I was there. I found out that it was protecting off shore oil interests for the Philippine government from China. I was in America the year before and I loved my time there and I loved the Americans I met, but when you are sitting in such an undeveloped, magical and delicate part of the world and a war ship the size of a city appears, it casts a pretty sinister and oppressive shadow. This song isn't specifically about that, but it came to me in that situation, so it is a reflection of the feelings I had then. It is dedicated to my good friend Mike in Nha Trang.
In my own little world, I am still in London and enjoying catching up with friends. Yesterday I played a gig in Hoxton with a very old musical friend of mine, Micky Bucherri. We used to play together for many years in a beautiful band called The Bareskin Rugs. We probably haven't done a gig together for ten years, so it was great to find that spirit again between us. Hopefully I will be putting up some recordings of the two of us soon…
love to all,
Nik.
